As per the name of semi- permanent means is longer lasting, but not permanent. Some of us use the words permanent eyebrows because it used to be done by tattooists, many years ago, so brows were tattooed forever, true.

Nowadays, semi permanent makeup looks totally natural, the color is adjusted to the hair color, face skin condition and tone od the skin and many more. Semi permanent makeup nicely done should not be visible easily, should just underline natural beauty.

So, how long should it last if not forever?

Semi permanent eyebrows fade after 1 to 2 years, depending of the activities (sportswomen should touch up color more often), skin condition and climate where you live. Eyeliner can be a bit longer, maybe up to 3 years. Also, depending if the eyelash extension where applied- the glue could affect so the effect that will not last long. The semi permanent lips are the most extended effect as there is the biggest area with the tissue and already the skin is with natural red color. This help the skin to absorb more pigment but due to that is the bigger tissue can be also the most puffy so is good-to-know before getting them done. Although, the effect should last up to even 4 years if is nicely hydrated during this time with some lip balms.

What to do to extend the effect?

For all of the areas, whatever is pigmented, the most important to keep skin in good condition which means well hydrated. If you clean your skin twice per day and apply moisturiser is already great. If you also drink at least 1l water per day that is just amazing. Also, if you live in a country that is hot and sunny most of the time sunblock should be applied every day, a minimum of once in 20 min before going out. If all of the above conditions are used then your semi permanent makeup should last long. Well done!

Why do some of the semi permanent eyebrows look reddish/ bluish?

Our skin has one of two tones: warm or cold. Skin Clients which sit in the ‘cool’ category will require warm-toned pigments to neutralise their cooler undertones and produce natural results – and vice versa. Using cool pigments on a cool-skinned the result in blue or grey-toned brows and using warm pigments on a warm skin could result in orange or red-toned brows. No one wants grey or orange brows, we all want a neutral colour that looks as natural as possible – hence why colour theory is so important! And by the way this is another reason why the Semi Permanent Makeup Artist need to be well educated in colorimetry and the price for this service cannot be cheap.

Another aspect that can lead to the reddish color of permanent eyebrows is the placement of the pigment itself. As permanent tattoos are intentionally placed in the skin’s dermis, which is why ink stays for life. Semi permanent makeup pigments are supposed to be administered more superficially — in the epidermis, the uppermost layer of skin — allowing more room for the pigments to fade.
